The Doctoral programme in Comparative and European Legal Studies aims to train legal professionals with a keen awareness of transnational phenomena and a strong interdisciplinary background, who can pursue careers in academia or outside the university environment.

Teaching focuses on the comparative, diachronic, and synchronic aspects of legal experience, as well as on the connections between the subjects covered by the programme's research areas. From the second year onwards, doctoral students are required to undertake a research period abroad lasting at least six months.

The courses, regardless of the research areas, are organised into interdisciplinary modules that address topics of common interest, ranging from the economic analysis of law to the protection of fundamental rights, from legal comparison methods to the evolution of European legal thought, from theories of interpretation to the legal implications of globalisation.

The programme is further enriched by courses and seminars featuring Italian and international external lecturers as well as classes conducted in English.

To apply for the PhD programme, you must have:

  • a specialist or master's degree or a degree issued under the previous regulations;
  • a second-level diploma awarded by higher-education institutions for the fine arts, music and dance (AFAM, Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale);
  • an equivalent academic qualification obtained abroad (master's degree) that allows admission to the PhD program in the education system or in the country of issue and that is considered suitable by the selection committee for the sole purpose of accessing the course.

For the 42nd cycle 6 positions covered by three-year scholarships are available:

  • 5 scholarships financed by the University of Trento;
  • 1 scholarship financed by the by the Faculty of Law of the University of Trento on the topic “Deviance and new forms of addiction of minors in the digital society: criminological and legal aspects”.

  • Assessment of qualifications (carried out by the Commission without the presence of the candidates): starting from 29 June 2026.
    The results will be published upon completion of the selection  commission’s proceedings.
