Email communications
Ordinary e-mail is the main tool communicating via the Internet.
Unlike certified email, ordinary email does not guarantee the integrity of the message, the identity of the sender, the date of transmission, the certainty of receipt.
The read receipts and delivery notifications that can be set by the sender in ordinary email have no legal or probative value.
However, in the event of a court dispute, email messages can be freely examined by the judge for probative purposes even if they do not have the value of conclusive evidence.
Certified email provides the guarantees that ordinary email is not able to ensure. It can be compared to registered letters with proof of delivery receipt: it guarantees the integrity of the message, the date of transmission and the proof that it has been delivered through the use of receipts to which the law recognizes legal and probative value.
Like the registered letter with proof of delivery, certified email must be used for electronic communications when it is necessary to have a legal proof of sending and delivery.

The PEC-ID is an extension of Italy's PEC certified email which includes digital identity certification. The user of a PEC-ID has been identified based on technical rules issued with the Presidential Decree of 27 September 2012.
The PEC-ID is threfore used exclusively by a verified person.
How to contact the University of Trento if you are
- if you have a PEC address, you can write to the University's PEC address ([email protected]) attaching a copy of your identity document;
- if you have a PEC and a digital signature you can send signed requests so the University will have full certainty regarding your identity and the integrity of the message;
- if you have a PEC-ID you can write to the University's PEC address ([email protected]) without having to attach a copy of your identity document;
- if you do not have a certified email address you can send applications and documents to the University by registered mail (or fax, courier) or in person at the relevant offices;
- if you want to contact the University informally you can write a simple email to [email protected] or to other university addresses that you can find on the university website.
Communications should be sent to the University's certified email address ([email protected]) possibly using a digital signature, which is advisable for all official digital documents.
When sending documents that must be signed with a digital signature (e.g. agreements and contracts between public administrations), use the University's certified email address ([email protected]).
Futher information:
- use the P.I.Tre IT protocol and document management system if you are writing from an institution that is a member of the system, through its the P.I.Tre interoperability;
- you can no longer use fax to communicate with other public administrations.
What you can send
To be valid, instances and declarations submitted to the University of Trento must:
- be signed with digital signature or qualified digital signature, the certification of which are, in both cases, granted by an accredited agency;
- be sent via certified email (PEC) with attached the scan of the copy of the instance or declaration signed by the sender and copy of their ID;
- be sent by certified email (PEC-ID);
Senders are identified by the electronic system, utilised by the University of Trento, by using the electronic ID or the national services card, or by other identification instruments established by the administration following the current regulations.
PEC certified email is an official communication instrument used in Italy. All foreign nationals can contact the University of Trento through its certified email address from their regular email, attaching a copy of the signed document and copy of their ID.
Submitted documents must be created in compliance with the standards included in schedule 2 of the technical rules on digital preservation (Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of 3 December 2013) and on the creation of digital documents (Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of 13 November 2014). The digitally signed file may also show an additional extension (relating to digital signature or time stamp) compared to the original one (e.g. .PDF.P7M).
Possible working copies in different formats (.doc, .xls, etc.) are accepted only in addition to the version of the same document produced in one of the admitted formats.
Compressed files, at the moment, are accepted while waiting for the suitable technical verifications related to storage.
NB: We like to remind that sending large files (over 20 MB) is not advisable, as that is the limit that the current infrastructure can manage.
If a revenue stamp is required in the document to be submitted, the same may show by quoting in the submission the details present on the revenue stamp itself, or by scanning the telematic token.
