Emergency Medicine

COURSE INFORMATION
The doctors in training will acquire theoretical, scientific and professional skills in pathophysiology, initial
patient evaluation, clinical and therapeutic approaches to medical, surgical and trauma emergencies, as
well as in the management of local and disaster emergencies.
With this specialization, the trainees will gain deeper understanding of the biological and genetic foundations of diseases and of pharmacological treatments and procedures, and develop skills in critical diagnostics, clinical reasoning and resource management.
The programme aims to make the trainees fully prepared for the practice of emergency medicine, with the ability to: manage out-of-hospital rescues, diagnose and stabilise critical patients, define intervention priorities, manage airways, plan transfers, inform patients, communicate effectively with families and co-workers and apply the ethical, legal and organisational principles of the integrated emergency system.

Admission to medical specialization schools is by competitive selection.
Applicants must:
- hold a degree in Medicine and Surgery;
- be licensed to practice medicine by the start date of the teaching activities;
- pass the national admission competition, based on qualifications and an exam, which is launched every year by the Ministry of University and Research.
