Through the PRIN programme, the Ministry of University and Research - MUR finances research projects of significant national interest to promote the national research system, strengthen interactions between universities and public organizations, and promote the participation of Italy in EU initiatives.

PRIN projects last two years and must involve working groups from different institutions. The programme rewards the originality, methodological approach, impact and feasibility of the projects, but also the ability to attract funding and the scientific background of the people involved.

The PRIN 2022 call was published on 2 February 2022. The University of Trento was awarded over 15 million euros, for 195 projects. The first 178 projects started in 2023 and were financed with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Other 17 projects that were submitted for the 2022 PRIN call started in 2025. The funding was allocated by decree on 18 September 2024.

The 2022 PNRR PRIN call was published on 14 September 2022. 64 UniTrento projects were funded at UniTrento, with over 6 million euros.
